RICHLAND, Wash. - Hundreds of athletes converged on Richland's Fran Rish Stadium Tuesday for the Annual Special Olympics Track Meet.

More than 1,000 competitors took part in the event, with some of them arriving at 7:30 a.m.

Police officers from Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland also came out to show their support. They also brought along their police cruisers to let the kids check them out.

"You see a great, diverse population of students, and it's a really rewarding feeling, getting to work with them, and we've trained for six weeks, multiple days a week," said Richland High School's Educational Aid, Scott Piippo.

The athletes represented more than 20 schools from around the area. Tuesday's events included the long jump, the softball throw, and several different races on the track.
