Big Changes for Yakima's Police Athletic League

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima police officials are hoping to hire two civilian employees to take over the Yakima Police Athletic League.

Two officers that used to work at the facility have been moved back to patrol, meaning more officers on Yakima streets.

Captain Greg Copeland says they hope to hire the new employees this summer, so the officers can concentrate on their patrols.

"They're still fulfilling some of our community service responsibilities such as Block Watch, community meetings, presentations to the public, that type of thing," said Capt. Greg Copeland with YPD.

Copeland says because of the shift, the department can now move other officers to the city's second gang unit while saving money and resources at the athletic league.
