Benton County Sheriff's Office Working on Volunteer Program

KENNEWICK, Wash.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office is looking for new ways to stay connected with the community. Sheriff Steve Keane says they are working on getting a volunteer program up and running.

The sheriff's office recently started up its first Citizen's Academy, and some of the first graduates have already asked to be part of the volunteer program. Sheriff Keane says the next step is trying to figure out how to best use the volunteer's time and skills.

"Often times we have family members leaving town, and they want us to go check on their mom or dad, their grandfather or grandmother. I think that would be important. We could have our citizen volunteers go out and check on them," said Sheriff Keane.

Volunteers could also help with the speed radar truck and office work. Sheriff Keane says they are working to get the program off the ground by fall. All volunteers will need to pass a background check. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
