Cougars Drop Game To Washington, 3-1 in Pasco

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. – Washington State dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Washington Saturday afternoon at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Wash.

The Cougars (21-29, 8-18 Pac-12) surrendered two runs in the fifth and the Huskies (21-31, 12-14 Pac-12) held off a couple late WSU rallies to take the second game of the series.

Washington State starter Scott Simon (3-4) suffered the loss after scattering eight hits over eight innings while striking out five and walking just one. Simon allowed three runs but only one was earned. Huskies starter Austin Voth (7-5) struck out six over eight innings and worked out of a couple late-inning jams to come away with the victory. Trevor Dunlap pitched a scoreless ninth to record his fifth save.

"Two really good efforts by our starting pitchers the past two nights," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut stated. "They are busting their tails and keeping us in games but our offense and defense hasn't been able to match the efforts by our pitchers."

The Huskies pushed a run across in the third inning, taking advantage of Cougar error that started the inning. Following the error, Washington bunted the runner up to second before using two straight hits to take a 1-0 lead.

In their half of the fourth, the Cougars tied things up at 1-1 after Voth hit Jason Monda with a pitch to start the inning and later uncorked a pair of wild pitches. After Monda reached, Adam Nelbubowich muscled a one-out single into right center that allowed Monda to move around to third before he came home after two straight wild pitches by Voth.

Washington answered in the top of the fifth with two runs, using three hits around a WSU error in the inning to take a 3-1 advantage. The Huskies took the lead with a one-out single up the middle by Andrew Ely who came around to score on the next play on Jayce Ray's double down the right field line.

The Cougars had a couple chances late as Brett Jacobs and Shea Donlin both singled with one out in the seventh but the Huskies got out of the jam with a flyout and a strikeout. An inning later, WSU again put runners on in the eighth after Monda walked and Yale Rosen singled to right but Voth ended the Cougars threat by getting a pair of groundouts to hold the lead.

"We have to cash in and get a big hit when we have the opportunities and just havn't one in a while," Marbut added.

"Washington had a couple (clutch hits) today. They got the big hit and we didn't."

Rosen, Jacobs and Donlin led WSU with two hits apiece.

The series concludes Sunday at Noon.
