Huskies Sweep Cougars in Pasco

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. – Zach Wright pitched seven shutout innings and Washington knocked off Washington State 5-2 in Pac-12 Conference baseball at Gesa Stadium, Sunday.

With the victory, the Huskies (22-31, 13-14 Pac-12) completed a three-game sweep of the Cougars (21-30, 8-19 Pac-12), their first over Washington State since 2005.

Washington provided Wright (5-5) all the support he needed by jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Huskies scored a run in the first, three in the second and one more in the third against Washington State starter Tanner Chleborad (3-9).

"We dug a hole early and that has been the story of our season," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We showed some fight late, but the Huskies made some plays defensively that were big for them."

The Cougars scored both of their runs in the eighth against Huskies' reliever Tyler Davis. Trace Tam Sing and Collin Slaybaugh opened the inning with back-to-back singles and P.J. Jones walked to load the bases.

Tyler Kane came out of the Washington bullpen and retired Jason Monda on a deep sacrifice fly that scored Tam Sing. Yale Rosen singled to load the bases for the second time in the frame. Adam Nelubowich followed with a smash headed for the right field corner. However, Brian Wolfe, who went in the game as a defensive replacement in the eighth, made a diving snare of the ball at first base. The ground out pushed Slaybaugh across with the Cougars' second run as Rosen and Jones moved to second and third, respectively. Kane then got Brett Jacobs on a fly ball to end the inning and set Washington State down in order in the ninth for his fifth save.

The Cougars play Portland in Pasco, Monday at noon.
