Jump and Jive, Swing Dancing Mondays

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-  Swing dance is alive every Monday in Kennewick and it is a whole new generation that is keeping it jumping and jiving.

At Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Dillon Hall, you will find people swinging the night away to music of the 50's.

The make-up of the group is more of a younger crowd from all over the Tri-Cities.

It all started with Chris Walters passion for swing dancing.  Now Two years later, his class is thriving, teaching nearly a hundred teens to jump and jive every week.

Monday Swing Dance participant, ALex Norris said, "being able to go on the dance floor and going ok, I know more than just shuffling in a circle. It's fantastic and people like confidence. So, when you're having fun on a dance floor and you know what you're doing, people are drawn to that."

Walters says it's a great way for them to socialize and learn to swing.  "You find yourself in a safe place with people of the opposite sex. Some of them for the first time, where they're interacting with each other in a positive way.  In a safe way, where you can just go and dance. I mean it's just dancing. That's all that's going on,"said Walters.

Every Monday you can find people swing dancing from 7:15 to 11pm at Saint Joseph's Church off of S. Garfield Street in Kennewick.  Group lessons are from 7:15 to 8pm and after the floor opens up for "open" dancing.

Walters says everyone is welcome and it is free.
