NBCRightNow.com - The U.S. Department of Energy has a new secretary.

The Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman swore in Dr. Ernest Moniz Tuesday morning.

The 68-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor took the oath of office at the Energy Department. He replaces Steven Chu, who served as energy secretary in President Barack Obama's first term. Moniz served as an energy undersecretary in the Clinton administration.

Following his swearing in, Secretary Moniz told employees that he was honored to be back at the Department and was looking forward to a productive tenure.

Secretary Moniz has a busy first day, including briefings on energy and national security as well as remarks to the 2013 Energy Efficiency Global Forum.

He will also play a key role in helping with cleanup efforts at the Hanford site.
