The Gonzaga University women's basketball team will participate in the 2013 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), joining an elite group of 16 institutions.

Ten of the 16 schools, including the Bulldogs, are coming off NCAA appearances. Along with Gonzaga, the field features Georgia State University, University of Idaho, IPFW, University of Louisville, Loyola University Chicago, LSU, Mount St. Mary's University, North Carolina A&T, University of Oklahoma, Quinnipiac University, Saint Joseph's University, Stephen F. Austin, Stetson University, University of Tennessee at Martin, and Wichita State University.

This will be Gonzaga's first appearance in the Preseason WNIT.

The Preseason WNIT features a three-game guarantee format. The event opens Nov. 8 with first-round games. Second-round games will be played Nov. 10-11; semifinals will be Nov. 14; and the championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 17.  Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 15-16. All games are hosted by participating schools.

The official tournament bracket with first-round opponents, game dates and times will be announced next month.

The championship game will be nationally televised live on CBS Sports Network at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, Nov. 17.

In last year's Preseason WNIT, North Carolina defeated Iowa 77-64 in the championship game. Two years ago, No. 1 Baylor defeated No. 2 Notre Dame on the way to history's only perfect 40-0 season.

The Preseason WNIT began in its modern form in 1994. It is organized and produced by Triple Crown Sports, a national sports event company based in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Bulldogs are coming off yet another impressive season in 2012-13. The Zags won their unprecedented ninth-straight West Coast Conference regular season title, the WCC Tournament Championship for the fourth time in five years and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season and sixth in seven years.

Gonzaga, who ended 2012-13 with a 27-6 record and a 15-1 league mark, welcomes back 12 letterwinners, including four starters next season.
