Donating to Red Cross Disaster Relief Donations Fund

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Anyone who has donated to the Red Cross may wonder where their money is going. Red Cross volunteers tell NBC Right Now the money pays to stock several emergency trucks full of food and water.

The trucks are called "Emergency Response Vehicle" or "ERV". Volunteers call in the trucks from all around the country to respond to disasters.

One ERV in Yakima drove to both the Taylor Bridge Fire near Cle Elum and all the way to the east coast for Superstorm Sandy.

"You almost felt like you were a rock star, it really was fantastic, people were so excited to see it all across the country, people would come up, they want to take a look inside, they want to know where we were from," said Red Cross Volunteer Stephanie Hakala.

The Red Cross says about 30 trucks are currently driving around Oklahoma's disaster areas. None of them are from our area.
