Local Man Receives Invite to 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Some of the world's best athletes are gearing up for a competition that requires strength, agility and just a hint of reckless abandon. It's the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games - and one local man will be there.

The CrossFit Games Open is still underway in some places. There are 17 regional competitions around the world. In July, the fittest men and women will gather in California for the Games. Ken Idler will be among them.

"Endurance is probably my strength. I don't go real fast all the way through. I just stay pretty steady and pretty soon I end up beating people," Idler said.

"Competing is in our blood. So here we are. We love every bit of this. It's gone from competing on our own and us being number one to every one of my clients out here is number one," said Idler's coach, Tim Smith.

Or number 18, for Idler that is. Out of the 1,600 people competing in the 50 to 54-year-old Masters Division only the top 20 make it to the games. Smith was actually the one who convinced Idler to compete in the 2012 open.

"I think I finished 300th that year and I thought well, what would happen if I worked at it. I never intended on competing at all. But this has been pretty exciting," Idler said.

Idler does a grueling workout five times a week and follows a strict diet. He said he's in the best shape of his life right now.

"I'm a competitive person. I want to say I'm going to enjoy the experience and I will. But, I want to compete. I want to see how far I can go and then I've already set goals for next year," Idler said.

Idler said his goal is to make it into the top ten or even the top five for next year's games. The 2013 Reebok Crossfit Games are coming up in July. Idler and his wife will head to Carson, California for the event.
