Tri-Cities schools set for WIAA championship weekend

TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- Friday state baseball gets back to business. Kennewick enters the state semifinal against Auburn Mountainview at GESA Stadium. The winner of that game plays Saturday for the 3A title against the winner of Mount Si and West Seattle. Kennewick already passed last year's team. Now it looks to match the 2008 state champion team.

"I think this year we have a good shot. It feels really good to come down to the final four in the state 3A title. So an awesome experience for all of us, for all the upcoming guys. It's going to be a great experience," Kennewick shortstop Vinnie Gonzalez said.

"It feels pretty good. I mean, to know that all the hard work we put in and we're this close, but we can't stop now. We got to work hard this week to get that much better," Kennewick pitcher Clayten Ayres added.

The eventual state softball champions in the WIAA have to win four games in two days. Friday Richland hopes to start on the right track against Tahoma. Last season Richland finished third at the 4A state tournament. The Bombers had to replace seven senior starters and look as good as ever. Last Saturday Richland finally beat Walla Walla to advance.

Kamiakin begins its road back to the championship against Kelso. Last season Kamiakin won the 3A state tournament. But Kelso has the Greater Saint Helens 3A player of the year in Sierra Richards. Still Kamiakin does not lack experience or confidence. The Braves have played on the big stage against the big teams before.

Hanford soccer will play in the state semifinal, taking on Bonney Lake at Sparks Stadium. The winner of that game plays Saturday for the 3A state title against the winner of Bainbridge and Shorecrest. Hanford beat Kennewick and Juanita to reach Friday's state semifinal match.
