Driver Described As 'Horrified' After Causing Bridge Collapse

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - The truck driver whose oversized load is blamed for causing last night's bridge collapse in Washington state was "just horrified" when he saw what happened.

That's according to the wife of truck driver William Scott.

Cynthia Scott says she spoke to him just seconds after it happened. He told her that as he drove over the bridge, he looked in the rear-view mirror, and the bridge just "dropped out of sight."

The load of drilling equipment hit an overhead girder on the bridge on Interstate 5, the main route between Seattle and Canada. It sent a section of the highway into the Skagit River, along with two vehicles. But all three people in those vehicles escaped with only minor injuries.

The driver voluntarily gave a blood sample for an alcohol test, and wasn't arrested.

Officials say it could be weeks before travel returns to normal along the heavily-used corridor.
