Kootenai County Sheriff's Department Press Release:

At approximately 1410 hours a Deputy with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Backcountry Unit responded to the area of FS Rd 413 and FS Rd 3097 after hearing what sounded like yelling for help. When he arrived in the area he was flagged down by a camper and advised a female was stuck in a hole near the creek.  Additional personnel from the Sheriff's Office Recreation Safety Section along with personnel from the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and the US Forest Service responded to the scene.  Attempts to remove the female from the hole were not successful and the female was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The female was extricated from the hole by Kootenai County Fire and Rescue personnel.  The hole appears to have been caused by animals in the marshy area.  It was learned that the female was walking in the area with her children looking for frogs and other small animals.  At this time there appears to be no foul play and this is just a tragic accident.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the family.  Alcohol was not a factor.

The prosecution said Arteaga was very jealous that his relationship was ending with Schmidt and she was moving on. They say that's part of the reason why he decided to kill her at the beginning of 2012. The defense disagreed saying that Arteaga was not there when she died and they think she may have even died of suicideMore >>
