Teamwork and Volunteerism, Theme of Memorial Day Service

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -The speaker at a Memorial Day service in the Tri-Cities is praising first responders at the Oklahoma tornado and the Boston Marathon bombing.

Several hundred people attended the service at Riverview Heights Cemetery.

Lieutenant Commander Carl John Butterfield says many of the men and women who rushed to help victims in Oklahoma and Boston were active service members or military veterans.

"It's that can-do spirit, that sense, if somebody needs help, I'm not going to wait around," Butterfield told the audience. "The military, our natural character tends to breed service beyond self."

Butterfield also encouraged the Columbia River Young Marines participating in the service to volunteer.

Butterfield is a volunteer himself, and is a past Tri-Cities Volunteer of The Year.
