Bicyclist Dies After Collision with Truck

YAKIMA, Wash.-- A Yakima man hit by a truck last week while riding his bicycle has died.

Juan Zavala, 25, was riding along 16th Avenue near Jerome Avenue when he jumped his bike into the street.

A 53-year-old driver wasn't able to stop in time and hit Zavala.

Police say Zavala was thrown nearly 80 feet in the crash.

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The 25-year-old bicyclist who was hit by a truck Tuesday is still in very critical condition.

Yakima police say Juan Zavala was riding his bike along 16th Avenue near Jerome Avenue when he jumped his bike into the street.

A 53-year-old Yakima driver wasn't able to stop his car in time and hit Zavala who flew 80 feet.
 
Police say the cyclist was at fault.

YAKIMA, Wash. - Yakima Police say a bicyclist is in critical condition in the hospital after he crashed into a truck. 

Police say they found the bicyclist lying in the roadway at 16th Avenue and Jerome Avenue.

Paramedics took him to the hospital with severe head trauma. 

Witnesses told police the bicyclist had been headed south bound, off the road, when all of a sudden he jumped off the curb and into the street. 

Officers say the driver of a pickup truck, 53-year-old Jesus Chavez tried to avoid the cyclist, but couldn't, and threw him 80 feet.

Detectives say the bicyclist seems to be responsible for the collision, but they are still investigating.

Police say they're not releasing the name of the bicyclist until they can notify next of kin.
