Panhandling For A Cure in Richland

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash- The definition of 'pan-handling' is to approach strangers and ask for food or money, but one woman in Richland has put a new twist on an old trick.

Janis Clardy and her family and friends spent their Sunday standing on the sidewalks near Walmart in Richland. They held the expected cardboard signs, but instead of reading things like 'will work for food' they read 'I have a job.. I have a home... I need a cure.'

"The other day we were at Walmart and there was a bum on the street and he was begging for money. I thought, if he can do it, we can do it and raise a few dollars," explained Clardy "It seemed easy enough and so far it's working."

The group raised almost $400 in just a couple hours today. Clardy says it was such a success, they'll be begging for a cure at every Walmart in the Tri-Cities. The money will be donated to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center.
