SPOKANE, Wash. - On Monday afternoon the defense team for Clay Starbuck & prosecutors wrapped up their closing arguments in the Clay Starbuck murder trial. Starbuck is accused of murdering his ex wife Chanin Starbuck on December 1st 2011 and sexually violating her remains. In closing prosecutors painted Clay Starbuck as a jealous, obsessive and ragefull man for a number of reasons.

Clay was ordered to pay several thousands in Child support to Chanin plus attorney fees shortly after their divorce months earlier. Prosecutors also argued Clay was jealous and obsessive because he believed Chanin was cheating on him with other men and was "sexually promiscuous" & involved with online dating sites. The defense fired back saying "Clay, jealous? Maybe? Clay angry? Maybe? But not a killer."

Derek Reid, Starbuck's attorney, claims Clay is the victim of shoddy detective work and nothing more. There were two DNA samples found near the body of Chanin Starbuck. One being Clay's the other investigators could not identify. Reid argued the inconclusive DNA implicated someone else in her murder but detectives failed to follow-up. Reid argued "of course" Clay's DNA would be near Chanin in a home where Clay used to live.

Derek Reid told the jury"Murder trials need to be based more on just conjecture & speculation." This is exactly what prosecutors based their "theory" on Reid told jurors. In a rebuttal Spokane deputy prosecutor Larry Steinmetz argued that its not known if Clay acted alone in killing Chanin but the tested DNA evidence does not exclude Clay as being suspect. The jury was handed the case just after 1pm on Monday.
