Yakima Police Recognized for Heroic Acts

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash.--Some of Yakima's finest received a top honor Tuesday, including the officers involved in the Kiwanis Park ice rescue.

Sgt. Tim Bardwell and Officer Mark McKinney received the Medal Of Valor for their heroic efforts that day, one of the highest awards a police officer can receive.

Six other officers were acknowledged for their bravery and dedication to protecting the community.

"We all know what we're signed up to do this job for, and I think that most of us would do the same thing or at least attempt anyway," said Officer McKinney.

Two volunteer Chaplains were also commended for their work with Yakima Municipal Jail inmates.

The mayor, city manager and several council members showed their support at the ceremony.
