Yakima Fire Department Limits Firetrucks on Medical Calls

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Fire Department says it will no longer send fire trucks on every call for emergency medical services.

Now, Deputy Fire chief Bob Stewart says dispatchers will decide whether a call can be handled by an ambulance.

Stewart says sending the trucks to minor injuries wears them out, so now the department can save trucks and firefighters for critical emergencies.

The fire department says 75% of its emergency calls only require paramedics.
