SPOKANE, Wash. - KHQ has obtained a letter, sent to us by Clay Starbuck's sister, in which Clay and Channin Starbuck's children defend their father.
On Tuesday afternoon Clay Starbuck was found guilty of First-Degree Murder in the 2011 death of his ex-wife Channin Starbuck. the 42 year-old woman was found dead in her Deer Park home.
The five children that Clay and Channin had together have long-maintained their father's innocence, and in this letter, they continue to call for a new trial, citing prosecutorial misconduct and evidence suppression.
Below is the entire unedited, uncensored letter.
Statement from Clay Starbuck's Kids:
"Dad is NOT Guilty.
Prosecution and those who say our Dad is jealous, angry, abusive, greedy,
and obsessive, are saying lies. Dad has handled this whole situation the way he
handles everything...with truth, good character, and respect. He has tried very
hard to protect Mom from the mysterious, sneaky men that she was putting herself
and us kids around.
We are extremely disappointed that information was withheld from the Jury
from the very beginning. Before our testimony, we were told that we were not
allowed to talk at all about our Mom's lifestyle, or we would be stopped from
After this lopsided trial, we want a trial where all the information can be
presented to the Jurors, so they won't be surprised later to find out everything
that they were not told from the beginning, allowing a NOT GUILTY verdict as it
should have been all along. Prosecution hasn't proven a thing.
If they wanted to look into the character of our parents, you would think
they would begin by talking with us kids.
When Grandma Melanie talks to the news media about us kids being brain
washed and all the other stuff we hear her say on the news, she doesn't realize
that she doesn't know what she is talking about. We lived it. She didn't. It
isn't just two or three of us...it's all five of us.
If the Jury would have been given the truth leading up to Mom's murder,
there is no way the Jury would have come to a guilty verdict. Dad has never been
abusive, and those who say he was, are sadly mistaken.
Mom's online dating wasn't anything new that she started just after their
divorce. She had done this for over a decade. Her family and friends don't get
it, because they didn't know, or at least didn't know it was out of control like
Prosecution knew that there were more guys, but it would take a lot of work
to figure it out and they didn't want to do that when it was so easy to create a
circumstantial case against our Dad, especially being married and divorced
Prosecution stuffing evidence, ignoring facts, keeping the truth from the
Jury, and treating us kids (critical material witnesses to the case!) as they
have, is grossnegligence. What you are doing to our Dad, is a
crime. Convicting an innocent person is WRONG.
It is true that it is a complicated case. It is also true, that it didn't
need to be."
