Richland Spudnut Shop Celebrates National Doughnut Day

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. - Donut lovers across the country celebrated National Doughnut Day Friday.

The Spudnut Shop in Richland sold out of their famous potato pastry within hours Friday. The Shop raked in thousands of dollars in donut sales early in the day.

"There was a line out the door, all the way out. We had a full house in here and it was just nuts. We were running around each other... we call it the 'spudnut dance,'" said employee Sarah Louise Boslooper.

Since 1938, Americans have designated the first Friday in June a day to celebrate doughnuts. The Salvation Army started it as a fundraiser in Chicago during the Great Depression.
