Yakima City Council Considers Smoking Ban in Parks

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash.--The Yakima City Council is looking for your feedback. During their last meeting, Council Member Sara Bristol brought up the idea of banning smoking in city parks and city sponsored events.
Bristol said there's been many times she's been out in public and someone lights up right in the middle of a big crowd, putting some people in an uncomfortable situation.
Bristol said many other cities have banned smoking in parks, including Chicago, New York City and San Francisco. She believes it's time for Yakima to consider it as well.
"I'm more concerned about it being rude," said Bristol. "It's a lot like talking in the library. You don't have a loud conversation in the middle of the library not because it's going to hurt anybody's ears but just because it's rude. It interrupts what other people are trying to do."
A public safety committee is gathering more research to see what other cities have done when it comes to the ban. Bristol said public feedback is welcome to see if this is something community members would event want to impose.
