Suspect in Richland Baby's Death Found in California

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Police say a mother found her nine month old daughter dead in her crib Friday morning. The man suspected of killing the infant is now behind bars in California.

Richland police quickly worked to track down the man that they believe killed the baby and officers found him Saturday on a bus in California.

Police say Jennifer Reedy found her nine month old daughter, Serenity Reedy, dead in her crib on Friday morning at her Richland home.

An autopsy showed severe injuries to her body.

"She had fatal injuries to her head and other locations on her body. She died as a result of abusive head trauma. And the manner of death has been classed as a homicide," said John Hansens, Benton County Coroner.

Court documents show the baby suffered from two fractures to her skull and there were signs of sexual abuse.

Police say Jose Luis Aguilar, Reedy's boyfriend, now faces charges of manslaughter in the first degree.

A detective contacted Aguilar on his cell phone Saturday and Aguilar said he was in Oregon on his way home.

But police searched the GPS location on his phone and found him on a bus in Barstow, California, where local officers arrested him.

"It appears that Mr. Aguilar was on his way to flee to Mexico and that if we didn't get the charges filed on Saturday night, he would not be kept in custody in Barstow," said Andy Miller, Benton County Prosecutor.

Police tell say that Aguilar lived with Reedy for about a month and was at the house Thursday night.

When Reedy woke up Friday morning he was gone and so was her car and cash.

That's when she found her daughter dead.

The prosecutor's office is working now to get Aguilar in court in the Tri-Cities.

"We're in contact with California authorities to arrange logistics and determine whether formal extradition proceedings will be necessary," Miller said.

Aguilar is set to appear in court in Barstow, California Tuesday morning.

Reedy is working to set up a fund for people to donate so she can pay for the baby's funeral expenses.
