YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima Police called in SWAT teams to a house near Third Avenue and Mead Monday morning after getting reports of a man holding a gun to his wife's head.

It started just after three am when police got a call about a domestic disturbance.

Officers say an intoxicated man was holding a shotgun to his wife's head and threatened to kill her.

The woman escaped along with her baby and police surrounded the house.

The man finally surrendered around 8:30 Monday morning.

"Probably realizing the SWAT team was willing to come in and get him... It was to his best interest to... To surrender to them," said Yakima Police Captain Rod Light.

Police say they're not sure if the man refused to cooperate, or if he simply passed out and didn't respond.

They say he faces charges of first-degree assault.

Officers re-opened the roadway shortly after he was taken into custody.
