Fire Crews Battle Second Fire of the Day in Finley

FINLEY, Wash. -- Fire crews battled another blaze near Finley Tuesday.

The initial cause of the fire is said to have been a train running along the railroad tracks.

The fire caught lit nearby brush on fire and scorched an area near the Tessenderlo Kerley Chemical Plant.

But while the fire never touched the plant, it completely destroyed construction equipment and supplies on a neighboring lot.

At one point, a loader truck was engulfed in flames.

"It's hard because it's the loss. There's good operating equipment and it's a loss you know? It's hard to recuperate," says Juan Murillo, the owner who rents the lot out to the equipment owner.

Murillo expects the truck alone may have been worth over $20,000 and that's not including the damage to surrounding equipment.

Another end of the fire reached Hover Park, and as one fire fighter explained, their clean-up work could go into the late night.

"It would just be putting out the flames and if there's any environmental issues then the department of ecology will be taking care of it. So we just keep it from spreading," said Tim Stewart of Benton County Fire District 5.

The crews did keep the fire from spreading. They tell us the blaze is currently contained.

The chemical pant was not threatened and the smoke was not toxic.
