Red Cross Set Up Camp Just in Case for Evacuees

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Before the evacuation orders were lifted, the American Red Cross set up shop at a local school and was ready to help.

Volunteers at Highlands Middle School had cots set up and ready, but no one came to the shelter seeking help.

In fact, while NBC Right Now was there, the only people that showed up were complete strangers asking if they could help in any way.

A representative we spoke with said she's happy with the reaction to the fire either way.

"I think we actually would be happier if people did show up because then we would feel as though we've really made a difference in their lives, but on the other hand if no one shows up that mean everybody is safe and well, as far as we know. So I guess it's probably good news either way," said Jeanne Jelke.

A Red Cross shelter was also ready to take animals in at the Benton-Franklin County Fairgrounds. Jelke says they are always prepared for the worst.
