Man in Critical Condition After Officer Involved Shooting in Kennewick
KENNEWICK, Wash. - A man is in the hospital after an officer involved shooting Friday morning in Kennewick.
Police say Dennis Jaymes Skellenger was at AutoZone along the 1200 block of W 4th Ave., and was trying to return items purchased with a stolen credit card. As officers arrived, the man quickly drove away and police did not follow.
Officers later heard reports of a man driving a similar vehicle in the area of Horse Heaven Hills Park. When police arrived, they found Skellenger who then ran away from his vehicle and tried to hide in construction equipment.
Police then tried to arrest the him in a field west of 29th and Anderson St. He resisted and officers shot him in the stomach. They say he was an armed threat with a gun.
"Nobody likes to have to use lethal force or potential lethal force," said Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg. "Fortunately in this particular case all three officers were not injured."
Skellenger was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle earlier this evening and is still in critical condition.
