GAME THREAD: Indians-AquaSox Season Opener

Updated:

Welcome to the game thread for the short season Class A season opener at Avista Stadium. The Spokane Indians open with a three-game homestand against the Everett AquaSox (the Mariners affiliate).

The game is live on SWX (Comcast channel 115).

Plenty of recent Major League talent has come through both the Indians and AquaSox. Jurickson Profar, Ian Kinsler, Chris Davis and Mike Olt (has had a stint with the Rangers) were with the Indians not too long ago.

Mike Zunino, the No. 3 overall pick by the Mariners last year, started 2012 with the AquaSox. He was recently recalled by the Mariners and will be their new everyday catcher.

Top 1st inning

Tough first inning for Rangers first-round pick Alex "Chi-Chi" Gonzalez. A leadoff single turned into a one-out run on an infield single and error. Another run scored on another single.

Despite the two runs and four hits, Gonzalez wasn't hit extremely hard and covered first nicely on a groundball to first base.

James Zamarripa had a single and scored on a Carlton Tanabe single. Phillips Castillo and Martin Peguero also had singles.

Bottom 1st inning

Not a lot going on, as Rigoberto Garcia mowed through the Indians 1-2-3.

Top 2nd inning

Rangers first-round pick Alex Gonzalez was chased from the game in the 2nd inning. Kyle Castro came in and stranded his inherited runner, so Chi-Chi's final line reads: 1 2/3 innings, five hits, three runs (all earned), one strikeout and one walk. He threw 34 pitches.

The score is 3-0.

Top 3rd inning

Another rough inning for Indians pitching. Castro allows two runs on two hits. He also threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to score and another runner to advance to third.

Carlton Tanabe had a perfect bunt single down the third-base line. I'm talking right on the line. Bryan Brito had an RBI double to the wall in center.

Bottom 4th

The Indians finally get on the board with a two-out double by Alberto Triunfel (younger brother of the Mariners' Carlos Triunfel). The line drive to left was also the first solid hit of the game for the Indians.

AquaSox lead 5-1 after four innings. The Indians pitching staff will have to cut down on the walks if they want to get back in the game. They already have a combined five through four innings.

Top 5th

Kyle Castro's night is done, as he leaves with a runner on second. Ryne Slack, who started the season with Single-A Hickory, comes on and strikes out Michael Faulkner.

Castro's line is three innings, two hits, two runs (both earned), four walks and five strikeouts.

Bottom 5th

The Indians pick up another run on a triple and sac bunt. Saquan Johnson hit a one-out triple to right that the outfielder bobbled (scored a triple, not error). Chris Garia followed with a bunt that was fielded by Everett pitcher Rigoberto Garcia. Johnson scored on the play, as Garcia never looked him back to the base.

Top 9th

We've arrived at the last inning. The AquaSox added an insurance run in the eighth with a solo shot by Alfredo Morales and lead 6-4.
