Another Rabid Bat Caught In North Idaho

Posted: Updated:

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - Another rabid bat in northern Idaho has turned up, this time after one was caught by a Coeur d'Alene family's pet dog.

The Spokesman-Review reported Saturday the dog had been vaccinated, but that it will remain under observation for several weeks, just in case.

Previously, another rabid bat was found in Coeur d'Alene, while another was found in the hamlet of Spirit Lake just to the northwest earlier this spring.

One cat was exposed and is under watch.

Three people inside their home were possibly exposed to the disease while they were sleeping. They underwent a series of five painful shots each, to protect them from rabies.

Panhandle Health District officials reminded people not to handle bats and to make sure their pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date.
