Yakima Airport Pays Off Loan Early

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Good news from the Yakima Airport this week: the city recently paid off a 250-thousand dollar loan from the county a year earlier than they expected.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke said they managed that by not hiring a new airport manager and getting rid of a few other positions.

Earlier this year, the city wasn't sure it could pay off the loan on time and the city council was looking at getting an extension.

"We had to make some tough decisions, reduce expenditures out there, and particularly to labor to control our costs now and going forward. So, I think it sets the airport in a good place," said O'Rourke.

The city is in the middle of an effort to revitalize the airport and attract more flights to Yakima.

The city council will talk more about the airport's future at a study session next month.
