Man Flees on Foot with Son after Car Chase in Cle Elum

Posted: Updated:

CLE ELUM, Wash. - The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office is looking for the man who ran away from deputies after nearly crashing into a patrol car.

The Sheriff's Office says 23-year-old Joseph Thomas, of Roslyn, nearly crashed into a deputy's car in the area of SR 970 and Airport Rd in Cle Elum, and then drove off.

Deputies say when they tried to pull over the car, Thomas sped off, leading them in a chase. At the intersection of Ley Road and Swauk Prairie Road, deputies say Thomas drove the car head on towards the patrol car again, forcing the deputy to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a crash.

Deputies say they eventually found the car on the 6100 block of Red Bridge Rd. They arrested a passenger in the car, Tiffany Willete of Roslyn, for rendering criminal assistance and resisting arrest.

Deputies say they later learned Thomas and Willete's 3-year-old son had also been in the car during the chase, and that Thomas had carried the boy with him when he ran from the car.

Deputies say the boy had been in a full body cast because he had a broken femur. Family members now have the child in their care.

Deputies say they have probably cause to arrest Thomas for attempted vehicular assault, felony eluding, reckless endangerment, and driving with a suspended license.
