Oregon Unemployment Rate Drops Below 8 Percent

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Ore.  - The Oregon Employment Department says the state's unemployment rate has dipped below 8% for the first time since the recession in the fall of 2008.

The state's jobless rate dropped to 7.8% in May.

The department says job gains have been strong recently in construction as well as in the trade, transportation and utilities sectors.

Economists say the rate is also falling because the percentage of the population in the labor force is dropping. Retiring baby boomers are a significant reason for that.
