Energy Secretary: Focus on Performance to be "Accelerated"

RICHLAND, Wash. -The Secretary of energy promises a new plan to handle technical and safety issues at Hanford.

After meeting with several hundred federal employees behind closed doors this morning at the Red Lion, Ernest Moniz came out and told reporters he'll have a new plan by the end of summer.

"I certainly want to reinforce a safety culture that's open and transparent. Like the pre-treatment facility, where we have to solve some technical issues to go forward. That, in the end, will be the most economical, safest, and most effective approach."

Hanford contractors have been under fire by watchdog groups for downplaying safety issues at the underground waste tanks and the Waste Treatment Plant construction site, but Moniz says he doesn't believe there are any imminent risks to the community.

During his confirmation hearings in April, Moniz said the current status quo of clean up at Hanford is unacceptable.
