Spokane International Airport Hosts Emergency Exercise

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Spokane International Airport hosted a full-scale emergency exercise from Thursday morning to train and evaluate first responders' ability to mitigate an aircraft accident.

The objective of the exercise is to provide the Airport's Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Department and other first responders with the opportunity to practice the Airport's Emergency Response Plan, as well as protocols for working with external agencies.

It is a comprehensive event which takes place on location, using – as far as possible – the equipment and personnel resources that would be called in an upon in a real emergency.

Once every three years Spokane International Airport is required by the Federal Aviation Administration to stage a full-scale exercise that practices their Emergency Response Plan. This event meets that requirement.

In addition, this will be the first year the Boeing 727 aircraft, that was generously donated by FedEx in 2012, will be incorporated into the exercise providing participants with a practical and realistic environment.

More than 40 volunteer "victims" contributed to this simulated exercise and an expected 40-50 emergency responders were involved.
