Eagles Honor Five Players With Year-End Team Awards

With summer conditioning getting underway, Eastern Washington University head football coach Beau Baldwin has announced awards presented to five players at the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year. The five players were honored for their performances and improvements in the off-season and during spring football practices.

Seniors Allen Brown and Ashton Miller (pictured) were given "Iron Eagle" Awards for their achievements in the off-season in strength and conditioning, as well as in the classroom. Earning most improved awards were sophomore offensive lineman Cassidy Curtis and junior defensive linemen John Goldwire and Zackary Johnson.

Brown is a 26-game starter at safety for the Eagles, and is 2009 graduate of Foss High School in Tacoma, Wash. Miller enters his senior season with 15 career starts and is a 2009 graduate of Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Wash.

Goldwire is a 2010 graduate of Lakes High School in Lakewood, Wash.; Johnson is a Washington State University transfer and 2010 graduate of Stanwood (Wash.) High School; and Curtis is from Denver, Colo., and graduated from Cherry Creek High School in 2011.

Brown has played in 39 games in his career, with totals of 181 tackles, two interceptions and 12 passes broken up. Despite standing just 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Brown finished second on the team with 91 tackles in 2012 to help him earn second team All-Big Sky honors. He was also second on the team with seven passes broken up to go along with a pair of forced fumbles. He started all 14 games for the Eagles at safety.

Miller earned honorable mention All-Big Sky honors in 2012 after starting all 14 Eastern games at center following a ruptured Achilles tendon injury in the first game of the 2011 season. He was also selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District VIII squad, which is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA), and was named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team.

Curtis takes over the right offensive tackle position manned in 2012 by All-American Will Post. Curtis played in nine games as a backup offensive tackle as a redshirt freshman. Miller and Curtis helped EWU rank seventh in the FCS in passing yards per game (318.9), 14th overall in total offense (442.0) and 17th in scoring (33.7).

Goldwire moved to the defensive line after previously playing at linebacker. He had seven tackles and two passes broken up in three spring scrimmages, after finishing with three tackles in eight games in 2012.

Johnson had 10 tackles in three spring scrimmages, including four stops and a half-sack in the Red-White Spring Game. In 2012 he played in four games and had four tackles after being projected as an offensive guard at EWU.

After summer conditioning, Eastern is planning to begin practices for the 2013 season on Aug. 7 in preparation for the team's season-opener on Aug. 31 at Oregon State. Eastern plays its home opener at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash., against Western Oregon on Sept. 7 at 4:05 p.m.
