Landscaping Company Gets Nod for CBC Vets Memorial

PASCO, Wash. - The Columbia Basin College Board of Trustees Monday is expected to approve the design for a new veterans memorial on campus.

The campus veterans committee has selected a design submitted by Jesse's Lawn Maintenance and Landscaping in Kennewick.

The memorial will be built between the CBC Hub and the C Building.

Jason Schlegel, chair of the veterans committee, says committee members and veterans on campus who helped select the winning design feel this memorial will be a living monument.

"It spoke to the idea as the armed forces as living organizations with living people," Schlegel says. "Often times we think of memorials as something to honor the dead. This honors service as well as those who've served and died for their country."

The Associated Student Body voted last month to pay the $75,000 to build the memorial. Other private donations will cover maintenance costs.

The CBC foundation hopes to break ground later this summer and possibly have the memorial ready in time for Veterans' Day in November.
