SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Residents in Spokane Valley were surprised by some unexpected guests Saturday morning: A mother moose and her calf.

They were spotted on the north side of the I-90 in between Pines and Argonne near Spaulding Auto Parts.

Washington State Patrol contacted the Department of Fish and Wildlife to come out and tranquilize them. However, that proved to be a difficult task. KHQ crews showed up and saw the whole process take place.

First, the officers had them cornered and were just about to shoot them with a dart, when they both bolted in opposite directions. So the plan quickly changed to getting one at a time, something they were eventually able to do. Once they were tranquilized, they were loaded up and taken to a wooded area on Mt. Spokane, away from residential neighborhoods.

They were not injured during the process.
