City of Yakima Considering "A" Street Name Change

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. - Two veterans groups in Yakima want to rename "A" Street after the city's only medal of honor recipient.

VFW Post 379 and American Legion Post 36 have applied to change the name of A St. to Sgt. Pendleton Avenue after Jack Pendleton. Sgt. Pendleton died in World War II after storming a machine gun nest in Germany, drawing enemy fire so the rest of his squad could take out the nest.

"We want to keep not only Sgt. Pendleton's name out there, we want people to remember him, we want people to remember all veterans. And having a street named after a vet seems like a good way to do it," said Rick Beck with VFW Post 379.

Sgt. Pendleton is buried in Tahoma Cemetery on 24th Avenue. He was only 26 when he died.

Yakima City Council will decide whether to move forward on the issue at their meeting next week.
