EVERETT, Wash. -- A fierce 3-run 9th inning rally fell short, as the Spokane Indians lost their series opener to the Everett AquaSox on Friday, 5-3.

Ryan Cordell singled to load the bases for the Indians in the top of the first inning, but the offense didn't produce another basehit until the ninth inning, when Marcus Green double to left to drive in Kevin Torres and break up the shutout.  Gabe Roa followed suit with a 2-run double, but Cam Schiller grounded out to second base to end the rally and the ballgame.

Thyago Vieira (5.2 innings, 1 hit), Richard White (0.1 IP), and Nick Valenza (2.0 IP) combined to one-hit the Indians through the game's first eight innings, before the 3-run ninth.  Mariners first-round draft choice D.J. Peterson paced the offense for the AquaSox (13-2), keying a 5-run 7th inning with a grand slam homerun off of Spokane reliever Abel De Los Santos.  The loss drops the Indians to 6-9 on the season.  Game two of the three-game series at Everett Memorial Stadium is Saturday.
