Volunteers Pack Boxes for Troops Overseas

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. - Hours after a local soldier was laid to rest Monday, dozens of Operation Thank You volunteers got together to help others fighting for our country.

The group is putting together boxes, filled with things like snacks, toiletries and even local honey to send to troops overseas. These volunteers send care packages about every 6 weeks, and say they send about one thousand over the entire year.

Organizers tell us they know they're making a big difference.

"It's really important. We got a letter recently from one of the troops and he said they've closed a lot of the PXs, and they're combining platoons and their needing food, said organizer Pam Swarner.

Volunteers say they plan on sending 170 boxes to Afghanistan Tuesday, and that it costs about $40 to mail one box. They say donations are crucial to keeping this project going. If you would like to help out, call Norma at 943-4572.
