Proposed State Budget Avoids Tuition Hikes for CWU

Posted: Updated:
ELLENSBURG, Wash.--For the first time in more than 25 years, tuition at Central Washington University won't go up for the 2013 to 2014 school year.

The approved state operating  budget allows Central to regain about $7.8 million for their administrative funds. Public affairs said this is money that they would have had to otherwise obtain from a tuition increase.

Staff at the university said the freeze comes as a relief to many students since tuition has been increasing in double digits over the last four years, making higher education unaffordable for some.

"The cost of education, tuition, plus state support is actually lower now than it was 20 years ago so it's just been a steady erosion of state support for higher education," said Linda Schactler, the Executive Director of Public Affairs for CWU.

Public affairs said during the second year of the proposed budget, from 2014 to 2015, universities could raise tuition but would have to moderate the effects of increases on low income students.
