NBCRightNow.com - Anyone traveling this weekend may want to be careful because Independence Day is the deadliest day to be on the road.
AAA says it is also the busiest holiday of the summer travel season with many people on the road, driving longer distances for the fourth.
Richland Emergency Services says the traveler increase puts drivers more at risk to drunk drivers. They say a majority of last year's Fourth of July collisions in the Tri-Cities area were alcohol related.
"The inattentiveness seems to be a huge factor coupled with people that are drinking and driving. It just creates for a volatile situation out on the roads," said Curt Walsh with Richland Fire & Emergency Services.
Independence Day has the second highest rate of alcohol related crashes, just behind New Year's Day.
