Firefighters On Alert For Firework-Related Fires

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Even though fireworks are illegal in Spokane, local fire departments still end up responding to fires caused by them on the fourth of July. "Last night we had four incidents that started four fires because of fireworks" says Assistant Fire Marshall Rick Freier and it's far from over "I'm actually as an investigator a little more worried about them going off tonight than I was yesterday because it's a weekend. Everybody can have a little more fun with some adult beverages and cause some more trouble, we're hoping that's not the case".

And if they see fireworks, they'll have to take them away, "got a little bag full here and made some people clean up a parking lot". All of the fires last night were caused by debris hitting the dry ground so but you need to be sure that you're careful when you throw used fireworks in the trash. "This is the kind of debris that lands on the ground and this can still be hot. Someone will pick it up and throw it in the garbage and it will start burning stuff up".
