Daring Escape Caught on Camera in Zintel Canyon Fire

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - A fire in Zintel Canyon quickly spread toward Conaway Street Friday evening, threatening nearby homes and one man's car.

Brandt Babers saw the 30 foot flames and sprinted towards his car in a daring and dangerous move to save his vehicle from the fire.

"I jumped through the passenger side door so I didn't get burnt or anything like that," said Barbers.  "I backed the car out and just moved it... adrenaline kind of kicked in and I was just like, 'oh wow I need to get that out,' [and] that's pretty much all that was going through my head," he continued.

After Babers reversed his car away from the fire, surprisingly the only damage done was this bubbled paint and melted front headlight.

Homeowners say fires in the canyon are nothing new, but that this is the biggest they've seen in a long time.

"Right across the street from our house...that was the scary part...we came home from a party and fire was blazing," said Clay Dickman, who lives across the street from where the fire happened.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 9 p.m. and contained the blaze within an hour.

Saturday morning, neighbors reported smoke rising from the canyon and firefighters returned to water down burnt brush.

"So they want to give us a heads up and get us out here quick before anything could get big," said Dan Winslow with the Kennewick Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it's believed to be sparked by fireworks. N

Neighbors say they heard a loud boom before the fire started.

Fortunately no homes were harmed in the fire, no injuries were reported and Babers made it out with his car.

WASHINGTON: It's barely pumpkin latte season and already signs are up advertising *flu* shots! One vaccine that's been off the market for a couple years is back this year. Two years ago the nasal spray vaccine was taken off the market because the Center for Disease Control said it was no longer effective for that particular flu season. For those who tend to get a little needle frantic, the CDC now says this year's nasal spray vaccine should be effective for this year's flu strain. I...More >>
