WSDOT Crews to Repave I-82 into September

Posted: Updated:

UNION GAP – Washington State Department of Transportation crews will begin repaving I-82 at US 12 starting Monday night from the Twin Bridges east of Selah to the Valley Mall Boulevard interchange near Union Gap.

Drivers will be restricted to one lane in each direction from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., when fewer vehicles are on the road.  Ramps near the Yakima Avenue and North First Street exits may close at times too.

According to WSDOT, the 14-year-old asphalt is rutting and deteriorating.  Crews will preserve the 5-mile section by removing the top layer of the roadway and repaving with new asphalt in both directions.  They will also repave ramps at the Yakima Avenue/I-82 Interchange, and the US 12/I-82 Interchange near North First Street.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to use extreme caution or use an alternate route as portions of the highway will have rough surfaces.  The speed limit through the work zone will remain 60 mph.

The $3.8 million preservation project is scheduled to be complete by the middle of September.
