Tennis Tournament Bringing Big Bucks into Yakima

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash.--A big tennis tournament in Yakima is bringing in some big names and big bucks.

Professional women tennis players from all over the world are vying for that top spot so they can continue on to the Grand Slam U.S. Open at the end of August.

The General Manager of the Yakima Tennis Club said hosting this tournament brings in more than 60 pros, their coaches and families into the valley.

Organizers said they also see thousands of spectators from all over the Pacific Northwest set up camp for the week long tournament.

This year, the tournament is also offering live streaming so people can catch a glimpse of the players and Yakima from all over the world.

"A parent in Japan can log onto the Yakima tennis website and can watch the match live," said Stephen Welt, the General Manager of the Yakima Tennis Club. "I'm sure a lot of people have never heard of Yakima before, but I think after this event Yakima will be on the tennis map even more than what it was last year."

Welt said the tournament brings in big revenue for the area. They work with Ledgestone Hotel and the Holiday Inn to book rooms.
