Pasco Apartment Rent Drop Box Thefts

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash.-- NBC Right Now is taking a closer look at a string of thefts in Pasco. Police say a thief is stealing rent money out of apartment drop boxes and one complex captured it all on video.

Police say the rent drop box thief is fishing out those monthly checks and making off with thousands of dollars from several Pasco apartments.

Now, Pasco police are looking for your help to identify the man who can be seen in a surveillance video stealing people's rent money.

This surveillance video caught a man stealing rent checks out of the drop box at The Crossings at Chapel Hill apartment complex in Pasco early Monday morning.

"We were absolutely shocked. We've never seen anything like that before. You know, in the office we're thinking we're missing two checks and we've never lost a check," said Kasey McComas, property manager at The Crossings at Chapel Hill.

McComas discovered the theft Tuesday morning when the rent payments were missing.

"When I was actually talking to one of the residents, I'm watching the footage as it's just playing out and I see a man come up. I'm on the phone with the resident that had this missing check and I was just like, you're never going to believe what I'm seeing," McComas said.

She says about half of the tenants use the rent drop box and they've never had a problem before.

Pasco police say several apartment complexes have reported rent drop box thefts over the last few weeks.

"They're all being stolen and taken in a similar way in the commons areas of the complexes is what's being targeted. Where people are depositing their rent money or checks," said Capt. Jim Raymond, Pasco Police Department.

The brazen thief did a double take when he read the apartment sign stating the room is under surveillance.

Raymond says this type of theft is uncommon and renters should not panic but take precautions.

"It's one of them type of things that's a rarity. It doesn't happen a lot. Most of our complexes throughout the city have good secure deposit boxes and that type of thing. But to be on the safe side it's probably best to hand deliver that to the management," Raymond said.

Pasco police tell me they are in contact with other agencies about the thefts and these rent drop box thefts are only happening in Pasco.

Officers urge you to call if you have any information about the thefts or the man in the surveillance video.
