Spread the Word, Not the Seed. Tackweed Pull in Pasco

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. -Lace up the walking shoes and pull on the gardening gloves. Saturday is the Great American Tackweed Pull.

Volunteers with the Tackweed Coalition will descend on Chiawana Park and walk the trails, pulling as much tackweed they can get their hands on.

Also known as Puncture Vine and Goatheads,  tackweed was brought into the area by birds many years ago. The thorns get into cars and bike tires, and shoes, and the vine spreads like there's no tomorrow.

The thorns can remain dormant for up to eight years, according to the Franklin County Noxious Weed Control Board.

Starting at the park boat launch from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, weed warriors will break into groups and walk the bike trails and start yanking.

Organizers say the more volunteers they get, the fewer thorns they'll see.
