American Red Cross in Emergency Mode for Blood Supplies

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash.--The American Red Cross needs your blood.

The organization said around this time each year, donations stop flowing in and supplies drop to emergency levels.

People go on vacations and high schools or universities stop hosting blood drives leaving the Red Cross with half their normal reserve.

"The shelf life of a blood product is only 42 days so we encourage everyone to donate every 56 days, which with a whole blood donation you can donate up to six times a year with that process," said JayAnn Merkle with the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross said all blood types are needed to meet the demand over the summer.
