Crime Tracker: Securing Your Home Before Vacation

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Giving the illusion that your home isn't empty is the first step in making sure your home doesn't become a target while you're on a vacation. A porch light left on during the day can be a dead giveaway that the people who live there are gone. The Spokane Crime Prevention Unit recommends day-night sensors for your front porch. They turn on when it gets dark and turn off when the sun rises. The Unit also recommends timers for lamps inside the home.

The next tip: calling the post office and asking them to hold your mail. Not only can a mailbox stuffed full of mail clue a predator into the fact you're not home, it also leaves you susceptible to identity theft.

There are other tips that will make your home appear lived in, as well. The Crime Prevention Unit says you should ask a neighbor to take out the garbage can on garbage day. Being the only house without a garbage can in front of it can tip off crooks.

It also recommends leaving an old radio on for background noise. The dull noise might make someone lurking around your home think there's someone inside.

Finally, you can even recommend a drive-by from local law enforcement. Senior Volunteers (363 – 8283) with the Spokane Police Department will drive by your home to make sure everything is okay.

You can make a home check request if you live in Spokane County by filling out a request with the closest S.C.O.P.E. office or at the Spokane County Valley Precinct or downtown desk.
